What do you picture when you think of Japanese PVC figures? You may picture an anime heroine of your dream coming alive in three dimensional model, a detailed miniature figure of your favorite sci-fi robots, or perhaps a distinctively deformed 2-head figure of kawaii anime characters.
PVC figure that we are featuring today falls under none of these categories. It is so different from what you usually find in Japanese figures, yet amazingly detailed and so…Japanese.
Our fellow otakus and Japan Lovers, we are introducing you a new genre of Japanese PVC figures, Buddhism statue: Revoltech Takeya Series No.001 Tamonten.
Whenever I look at it, it makes me think “who would want to buy this?”, but certainly there are some who adore this. We got an exciting comment from a person who is much hyped about this product when we posted an image of the product on our tumblr.
Tamonten figure was created by well known modeler, Takayuki Takeya, under Kaiyodo’s Revoltech series. Mr. Takeya has precisely reproduced powerful body of Buddhism guardian. Detailed modeling of armor and accessories completes realistic finish of this Buddhism statue figure. 13 cm (approximately 5.1 inches) PVC figure is mounted with 17 specially made joints and has 21 moving parts. Japanese figure maker Kaiyodo had difficulty with their sales forecast of this truly unique action figure before its launch, but the result of first sales ended with a great success. It was because extra sales came from people who were not into action figure, but simply love Buddhism statue.
Butsuzo Girl from Japan is probably an example of this type of consumer. She is a Japanese activist who preaches a beauty that Buddhism statues hold. Her attraction to Buddha statues is not coming from her religious belief, but more from her attraction to the statues as art forms.
This is a first statue figure of 5 sequences and released in February 2012. The second Buddhism statue figure will be released in March and the rest will come out in following month, one figure per month. What is your forecast on their figure sales? I would. I don’t care for action figures, I think it’s silly when I see grown ups buying anime figures, but those I’d definitely buy and may end up with one.
