Hokkaido
Hokkaido, Japan’s second largest island and the largest prefecture, is a home of gourmet food and a vast nature reserve. This land, where many dairy farms are actively operating their farms, is a popular production area of racing horses.
Hokkaido is a top winter destination in Japan. You can attend annual snow festivals in a prefectural capital, Sapporo, which also hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics. The city of Niseko is well known for a world class ski resort and its superior snow quality. Other cities like Furano, Otaru, and Hakodate offer beautiful sceneries and great food, attracting thousands of visitors all year around.
Hokkaido is also a home of Ainu, indigenous people of this region. Although majority of Ainu population were assimilated into Japanese society, they culture still remains in Hokkaido region. In fact, many local geographical names came from Ainu languages.
Tohoku
Tohoku is a northern region of Japan’s main island, Honshu, and it consists of 6 prefectures; Akita, Aomori, Fukushima, Iwate, Miyagi, and Yamagata.
This region which surrounded by rich natural environment is a home of Japanese folklore, historical heritages, and some of the best seafood in Japan.
The largest city in Tohoku region is Sendai, which is located in Miyagi. In samurai era, it was called the domain of Sendai and was ruled by Masamune Date, one of the most popular daimyo (samurai lord) in Japanese history.
* All of our sellers in Tohoku are currently operating their business as usual. Some of them suffered minor damages from the earthquake, but they reopened their business by mid 2011.
Chubu
Chubu, centrally located in Japan’s main island, Honshu, is a region where many Japan’s number one are found. It consists of Niigata, Nagano, Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Toyama, Gifu, Aichi, and Fukui.
Mt. Fuji, the Japan’s highest mountain, is located on the border of Yamanashi and Shizuoka. Toyama has Kurobe dam, the tallest dam in Japan. The city of Toki in Gifu prefecture is known as the largest production district of Japanese potteries, the district which produces Mino ceramics.
Beautifully illustrated Kutani ware is from Chubu as well. It is also a major production district of Japan’s finest timber, hinoki.
A mountain range, which lay across central Chubu region, is called Japanese Alps. This area where 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics was celebrated is a famous summer resort and winter ski resort, attracting many visitors all year around.
Kinki
Kinki, a home of the ancient capital of Japan, has been cultural Mecca for centuries. It consists of 7 prefectures; Mie, Nara, Wakayama, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, and Shiga.
A city like Kyoto is still a center of Japan’s traditional culture. It is the one of best places to find Japanese crafts.
Osaka, the second largest city in Japan, is a center of commerce of western Japan. Historically, this city has functioned as a base of distributing goods and services, contributing to flourish diverse culture in early years of Japanese history. It is also known as Mecca of Owarai, Japanese comedy performances.
Popular world heritage sites, Himegi castle and Kinkakuji, are found in this region.
Kanto
Kanto is the largest region in Japan in terms of population and economic size. It consists of 7 prefectures; Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Saitama, Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa.
Imperial Palace, the main residence of the Emperor of Japan, can be founded in Tokyo, the capital of Japan.
Tokyo today provides a great mixture of modern and traditional culture. Cities like Shibuya and Harajuku has been flourishing as the center of the newest entertainment and the trendiest fashion while areas like Nihonbashi and Asakusa maintains Japanese craftsmanship to produce traditional handcrafts.
Tokyo’s surrounding cities like Kamakura in Kanagawa and Nikko in Tochigi are also famous for historical Shinto shrines.
Chugoku
Chugoku is a western tip of Japan’s main island, Honshu. It consists of Hiroshima, Okayama, Shimane, Tottori, and Yamaguchi.
This region produces popular Japanese pottery, Bizen ware, which is most identifiable by raddish brown color and absence of glaze.
One of the most important Shinto architecture, Izumo Taisha, is located in Shimane prefecture. According to tradition, gods from all over Japan gather at this location one a year. This place is also popular for the god of marriage.
In Yamaguchi, you can find the largest limestone cave in Japan, Akiyoshido.
Chugoku region is interconnected to Shikoku region by the longest bridge in the world called Seto Ohashi. This 12.3 km long bridge connects 5 islands and its 2 layered structure holds highway on top and rail way on bottom.
Shikoku
Shikoku is the smallest island among all 4 islands of Japan. It consists of 4 prefectures; Ehime, Kagawa, Kochi, and Tokushima.
It is popular for Udon noodle, sweet tangerines, and the cleanest river in Japan.
Tokushima’s indigo dyeing is known for its beautiful dark blue color.
Otani ware and Tobe yaki potteries are also this region’s local specialties.
Shikoku region hosts one of three top obon festivals, Awa Odori, which is a traditional Japanese dancing with 400 years of history.
Kyushu
Kyushu is the Japan’s southern island. It consists of 7 prefectures; Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, Nagasaki, Oita, and Saga.
This temperate region produces famous potteies such as Arita, Karatsu, and Imari.
You can find many foreign influences in Nagasaki, which was the only prefecture open to foreign visitors under rule of Tokugawa family for nearly 300 years.
Okinawa
Okinawa, the island located in southern tip of Japan, provides one of the most unique cultures in Japan. It is famous for longevity of its population and a music instrument called sanshin.
